Rooster Facts
Did you know…? A rooster can’t hear his own crow? That’s right! As he opens his mouth wide to crow, it closes off the ear canal and he can’t even hear his own crow. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?
Sounds above 140 decibels can cause damage to the human ear. Prolonged noise (as in a saw) over 85 decibels causes tissue damage. A rooster’s crow is on average around 130 decibels. Just to give you an idea of how loud that is: a firework or rocket is usually around 140, a police siren is around 120, a dog’s bark and lawnmower are around 90 decibels. A normal human’s voice is around 60 decibels along with the average hen clucking coming in around 60 decibels as well.
So while a rooster can’t hear his own crow, his hennies definitely can and do sustain hearing damage. A good thing for them, chickens can regrow damaged ear tissue, unlike humans. #natureissocool
But I love the sound of a rooster. It’s the sound of the country. I’d rather hear a rooster crowing than horns and traffic and sirens and construction.
Do you love a rooster’s crow? Or does it make you cringe and get annoyed {shut up already!}
